Course Focus and Scope

This course provides a historical survey of selected literary works from the British Isles (English) and North America (American), spanning from its beginnings through the 21st century.

The survey is used to achieve the following:

  • Engage pre-service English teachers in understanding the depth and evolution of these literatures.

  • Develop students' ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique literary works and authors who have transformed the literary landscape.

  • Equip students with a broad knowledge of the multiplicity of literary texts, analyzed through socio-historical, philosophical, and literary underpinnings.

Rationale and Professional Competency Development

The course is centered on professional competency and critical skill development for pre-service English teachers. It aims to develop students' ability to:

  1. Demonstrate Content Knowledge and application of both English and American literature.

  2. Use the English language effectively within the context of literature and English language teaching.

  3. Develop Research and Articulation Competency in exploring philosophies, societal mores, and socio-cultural movements prevalent in the selected literary pieces.

  4. Hone the ability to articulate their understanding of literature through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches.

Expected Output

The course culminates in the submission of an Integrated British and American Literary Unit Plan and Adaptation Portfolio, which demonstrates the learned concepts and their critical application. This portfolio is expected toward the end of the semester, in addition to the final examination.
