This course explores the dynamic relationship between theater and society, examining how theatrical performances reflect, shape, and challenge social structures and cultural identities. Focusing on the historical development of theater from its ritualistic roots to modern and postmodern practices, students will critically engage with the role of theater in contexts of colonization, post-colonialism, and social movements, particularly in the Philippines and the Global South. Through readings, discussions, and projects, students will analyze theater's sociopolitical implications, cultural significance, and evolving nature in the 21st century.
